Copán is one of the most significant archaeological sites of the ancient Maya civilization, located in present-day western Honduras, near the Guatemalan border. This site is renowned for its stunning ruins, intricate stone carvings, and historical importance as a major cultural and political center during the Classic period of the Maya civilization.

Historical Overview

  • Early Settlement: Copán was first settled around 1500 BCE, but it became a major center of Maya culture during the Classic period (circa 250-900 CE). The city reached its peak between the 5th and 9th centuries CE.
  • Political Significance: Copán was a powerful city-state, often referred to as a kingdom. It was ruled by a dynasty of kings, beginning with its founder, K’inich Yax K’uk’ Mo’, around 426 CE. The city’s rulers were known for their political and military prowess, as well as their patronage of the arts and sciences.
  • Cultural Center: Copán was an important center for Maya art, astronomy, and hieroglyphic writing. The city is especially famous for its elaborate stelae (carved stone monuments) and altars, which were used to commemorate the deeds of its rulers and significant historical events.
