Geography

  • Location: Montenegro is situated in the Balkans, bordered by Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, Kosovo to the east, and Albania to the southeast. Its western coast is along the Adriatic Sea.
  • Landscape: Despite its small size, Montenegro features a diverse landscape, including rugged mountains, beautiful coastlines, and deep river canyons. The Durmitor National Park, with its towering peaks and Tara River Canyon, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bay of Kotor, with its picturesque fjord-like appearance, is another major attraction.

History

  • Modern Independence: After the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Montenegro remained in a state union with Serbia until 2006, when it held a referendum and voted for full independence, becoming one of the world’s newest countries.
