Melbourne (History)
- Early Settlement: Melbourne was founded in 1835 by settlers from the British colony of Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania). It was named in honor of the British Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.
- Gold Rush Era: The discovery of gold in Victoria in the 1850s led to a massive influx of immigrants and rapid economic growth, making Melbourne one of the richest cities in the world at the time.
