Morphometric Analysis of River Basins in the Vindhyan Region and Flood Susceptibility Mapping Using DEM and Hydrological Modeling
River basins in the Vindhyan region frequently experience flooding. Therefore, proper understanding of their physical characteristics becomes essential. This study performs morphometric analysis of selected river basins in the Vindhyan region. In addition, it creates flood susceptibility maps using advanced techniques.
Researchers first extract drainage networks from Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. Next, they calculate important morphometric parameters such as bifurcation ratio, drainage density, stream frequency, relief ratio, and elongation ratio. Moreover, they analyze slope, aspect, and topographic wetness index to understand basin behavior.
The team then integrates these parameters into hydrological models. They apply multi-criteria decision making methods like Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) along with GIS tools. Furthermore, they validate the model using historical flood data and field observations.
Results clearly show variations across different basins. Some sub-basins exhibit higher flood susceptibility due to high drainage density and low relief. In contrast, others display lower risk because of steeper slopes and better infiltration capacity. Therefore, the study identifies high-risk zones accurately.
This research provides useful information for local authorities. It helps them plan better flood management strategies in the Vindhyan region. Moreover, the findings support disaster preparedness and land-use planning in flood-prone areas.
In the long run, this approach improves flood forecasting and reduces damage to life and property. Consequently, it contributes valuable insights to watershed management in Central India.
