Krishna Consciousness Movement

The Krishna Consciousness Movement, rooted in Hindu bhakti tradition, worships Lord Krishna, emphasizing devotion, community, and outreach.

The Krishna Consciousness Movement, also known as the Hare Krishna movement, is a spiritual movement rooted in the bhakti (devotional) tradition of Hinduism. It is inspired by the teachings and practices associated with Lord Krishna, who is revered as the supreme deity in Vaishnavism, a major tradition within Hinduism.

The movement gained prominence in the Western world during the 1960s and 1970s, largely due to the efforts of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, a spiritual teacher and founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Prabhupada, who traveled from India to the United States in 1965, sought to spread the teachings of Krishna consciousness globally and establish temples and communities where devotees could practice bhakti yoga and engage in the worship of Lord Krishna.

Key aspects of the Krishna Consciousness Movement include:

Chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra: Devotees of the movement engage in the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra (also known as the Maha Mantra), which is believed to invoke spiritual purification and enlightenment. The mantra is:
“Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare”

Study of sacred texts: Followers of the movement study and seek guidance from sacred texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Srimad Bhagavatam, and other Vaishnava scriptures. These texts contain the philosophical and theological foundations of Krishna consciousness and provide guidance for spiritual practice and ethical living.

Devotional practices: Devotees engage in various devotional practices, including worship (puja), meditation (dhyana), singing of bhajans and kirtans (devotional songs), and offering of food (prasadam) to Lord Krishna. These practices are aimed at deepening one’s connection to the divine and fostering a sense of love and devotion towards Lord Krishna.

Community life: The Krishna Consciousness Movement emphasizes the importance of community and fellowship among devotees. ISKCON temples and communities serve as centers for spiritual practice, education, and social engagement, where members come together to worship, study, and serve each other and the broader community.

Outreach and education: The movement is actively involved in outreach and educational activities aimed at sharing the teachings of Krishna consciousness with the wider public. This includes distribution of literature, organizing public events and festivals, offering classes and seminars, and engaging in humanitarian initiatives and social service projects.
