Chamoli Tunnel Accident: Rescue Efforts in Full Swing

Chamoli Tunnel Accident: Rescue Operation Underway After Sudden Water and Debris Inflow

A major accident took place inside an under-construction tunnel in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. A sudden rush of water and debris entered the tunnel at the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project.

The incident happened while workers were carrying out construction activities inside the tunnel. The sudden inflow created panic and blocked parts of the passage. Several workers managed to escape, while rescue teams quickly began operations inside the tunnel.

Workers Describe the Sudden Incident

Workers who escaped from the tunnel described the situation as extremely sudden. One survivor said a powerful rush of air came through the tunnel before water and debris entered the area.

According to the worker, there was very little time to react. He managed to run outside and alert the foreman. Other workers then entered the tunnel to help those who needed assistance.

Another worker said water entered the tunnel with considerable force. The flow also carried loose debris. As a result, parts of the passage became difficult to cross.

The worker described the sudden water flow as similar to a large amount of water being released at once.

Rescue Teams Continue Operations

Rescue teams are working inside the tunnel to reach the affected sections. The operation involves removing debris and managing the water inside the tunnel.

Personnel from disaster-response agencies and other emergency services have joined the operation. Teams are also using equipment to clear blocked sections and improve access.

Meanwhile, authorities are monitoring the situation closely. The priority remains reaching the affected workers and ensuring their safe evacuation.

Investigation Into the Incident

The sudden movement of water and debris has raised questions about the conditions inside the under-construction tunnel. Officials are expected to examine what triggered the incident.

The Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project is a major hydropower project in Uttarakhand. The latest incident has also highlighted the challenges involved in constructing large underground structures in the Himalayan region.
